"Seeeeeee yaaaaaa!"
When I was a baby, my mom found a flea on my head. Naturally, she blamed our dog.
She was so upset - I was the first born and she was slightly overly freaked out about me all the time - that she threw our beautiful Siberian Husky named Deagan out of our house as punishment. It was as if Deagan, in some jealous attempt to sabotage my well being, had consciously planted a flea on me. (Deagan was more my father's dog than my mother's, so he was much closer to my dad as you might have already assumed).
This sounds like a normal story, right? An overly protective mother finds flea on first born's scalp and and throws dog out of the house. Not too out of the ordinary, however, Deagan never came back.
My dad was devastated. He had the whole town looking for him. He called the radio and the newspaper and placed ads with rewards for his recovery. He commissioned a search party with the neighbors, but Deagan was never found.
It is more than likely that someone found him and took him in. After all, outside of having an occasional flea, he was well mannered, great with other dogs and people, and had beautiful crystal blue eyes. He was actually very much like Griffey, the Siberian Husky who is plastered all over our site.
The other possibility is that Deagan, being a breed of dog born to run Iditarods for miles among snow capped mountains and backcountry, just took off and never turned back.
Now, 30 plus years later, with my dad still claiming that my mother killed his dog, it made me think - what kinds of dogs are prone to running away? Here is a list that you as a dog owner should keep the closest of eyes on...
