Kids have tons of energy. So do puppies...and like humans, when they get older, naturally they slow down a bit. Certain breeds have dispositions and personalities that are prone to exhibit a lot more energy and require a lot more exercise than others.
It's important when choosing a dog to understand these predisposed traits and try to align those with your [family's] personality and lifestyle...for example, if you love coach-potatoing, I would probably suggest a lap dog over any of the dogs below. Likewise, if you're a marathon runner I wouldn't go with a cuddly little Pomeranian.
All dogs need exercise or there's a good chance they will get unruly and start exhibiting negative behavior. This doesn't mean your dog needs to get a 5 mile run in every day, but the minimal walks are essential to a dogs physical and mental health. Remember, when your dog doesn't get his exercise, your dog becomes an unhappy dog...no one wants an unhappy dog!
