When it comes to squeezing out that motivation to get your workout in, nothing is better than an energetic workout partner.  And when it comes to running, there's no one happier to accompany you on your run than man's best friend.

Most dogs out there will enjoy a good jog here and there, but there are a few breeds that have been Darwin'd over time for running.  When it comes to pure running, here are the top 10 best running dogs out there. 

10. Jack Russell Terrier

Yes...the dog from the Mask.  The Jack Russell Terriers have tons of energy and are made for running for extended periods of time.  For a medium sized endurance partner, this guy is your best bet. 

9. Siberian Husky

The most charismatic and outspoken of the group, the huskies have were bred for this list.  If you happen to live near the equator this might not be the breed for you - they boast a thick, insulated double coat that keeps them cozy in the sub-zero temperatures.  Intelligent, energetic, and stacked with endurance...if you're looking for a fun endurance companion in a cooler climate, this is the one for you.  

8. Vizsla

You want a dog that's quick, can do long distances, and may be able to jump over some logs or avoid obstacles throughout the trail - the Vizsla is your dog.  On top of that, their exceptionally trainable, so those living in an urban environment or whom want to go leash-free, will love the perks of the Vizsla breed. 

7. Alaskan Malamute

The bigger, more mature uncle of the Siberian Husky, the Alaskan Malamutes carry virtually all the characteristics of the Husky, except they are much larger.  If you carry packs over long distances and/or need an endurance runner for the cooler climates, this is your guy. 

6. Australian Shepherd

One of the herders of the group, the Australian Shepherd is great with people.  They generally have a mild, but personable nature and can either suit an active family or those looking for a good companion to explore different types of terrain.  

5. Dalmation

Dalmatians can pace with horses so there's no way you're going to be dragging this guy.  If you like a brisk pace and a companion for a long-distance jog, this is your breed.  

4. German Shepherd

With a strong and extremely durable build, these guys can keep pace with any of the dogs on this list.  They're great with kids, extremely protective and great for protection, and eager to please.  On top of that, they love running.  If you're looking for a protective dog that you can run in the dark with, this is your guy.  

3. Border Collie

Another herder, the Border Collies are agile runners and one of the most intelligent breeds of dogs out there.  They love staying busy and having a job to do so if you're extremely active and busy, this may be the perfect breed for you. 

2. Weimaraner

The Weimaraners are an all around great pet.  They're fearless, easily trainable, and a great family pet.  On top of that they're great for pacing long distances, but can turn it on in short, quick bursts when needed.  For a versatile running companion who's great with a family, this may be your best bet.   

1. Rhodesian Ridgeback

This breed was originally bred to hunt lions in Africa so they're the super-athlete of the group.  No they're not mean.  They're surprisingly great with people.  Additionally, they have an extremely efficient low-maintenance, short coat which keeps them cool in the heat.  If you're looking for an extremely athletic, friendly running companion, this is your guy.
